Trilobites are a fossil group of extinct marine arachnomorph anthropods that existed, and thrived, for about 300 million years in the oceans. They suffered a decline in the Devonian era but it wasn't until the mass extinction that took place during the Permian era, (the biggest extinction in history) about 240 million years ago, that these unique creatures died out. There are over 20,000 scientifically recognized Trilobite species, and they are considered to be one of the most successful early species to exist.

This particular dark Trilobite specimen gives an ideal look at the structure of the Trilobite. The cephalon head portion has been worked on painstakingly to reveal its details beautifully, and the thorax has great definition of the segmenting that Trilobites are known for. Overall this piece would be at home on display in any collection or in an office!

Trilobites have intrigued humanity for centuries, being worn as amulets by the Pahvant Ute people and incorporated into ornamentation before they were even identified fully as a species. The Pahvant Ute called them “Timpe-Konitza-Pachuee,” which is translated to, "little water bug living in a house of stone." They were misidentified for a brief time, being considered a flat species of preserved fish in the 1600's.
