Understanding Tumbling Grits
Rock tumbling happens in stages, and each stage uses a different grit. Think of it like sanding wood — you start rough and gradually move to a fine finish.
Stage 1: Coarse Grit (Shaping)
This is where the biggest transformation happens. Coarse grit removes rough edges, smooths sharp points, and begins shaping the stone.
- Runs for: 5–7 days
- Result: Rounded, but still dull stones
- Tip: This stage does the heavy work — don’t rush it
Stage 2: Medium Grit (Smoothing)
Medium grit removes scratches from the first stage and continues smoothing the surface.
- Runs for: 5–7 days
- Result: Smoother stones with fewer visible scratches
- Tip: Clean your stones and barrel thoroughly before moving on
Stage 3: Fine Grit (Pre-Polish)
This stage refines the surface and prepares your stones for polishing.
- Runs for: 5–7 days
- Result: Very smooth stones with a soft sheen
- Tip: Any scratches left here will show in the final polish
Stage 4: Polish (Final Shine)
The final stage brings out a bright, glossy finish.
- Runs for: 5–7 days
- Result: Smooth, shiny, polished stones
- Tip: Clean everything extremely well before polishing
