Geology is a science of deep time — a discipline that examines processes unfolding over millions and even billions of years. Yet for much of its history, the people whose work shaped Earth science were not equally represented or recognized.
This Black History Month, we honor four African American geologists whose work, leadership, and perseverance fundamentally shaped geology, geography, and Earth science education:

Why Representation in Geology Matters
For much of the 20th century, geology remained one of the least diverse scientific fields. Barriers to higher education, limited access to fieldwork opportunities, and systemic exclusion prevented many talented scientists from entering — or advancing within — the discipline.
Recognizing Black geologists is not about revising history. It is about completing it.
Geology seeks to understand the Earth in its entirety — and that understanding is richer when the scientific community reflects the diversity of humanity itself.
Dr. Marguerite Thomas Williams (1895–1991)
A Pioneer of Physical Geography and Environmental Study
Dr. Marguerite Thomas Williams made history in 1942 as the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in geology or geography. Her doctoral research focused on erosion and landscape development — work that laid important groundwork for modern environmental and urban geography.
At a time when both racial and gender barriers were deeply entrenched in academia, Dr. Williams pursued advanced Earth science research while also committing herself to education and mentorship. Her work examined how natural processes shape landscapes and how those landscapes, in turn, influence human settlement.
Dr. Williams’ career reminds us that Earth science is not just about rocks and minerals — it is also about place, people, and environmental change.
Dr. Mack Gipson Jr. (1931–1995)
Advancing Petroleum and Resource Geology
Dr. Mack Gipson Jr. was a geologist whose work focused on petroleum geology and resource exploration, fields that play a critical role in understanding subsurface structures and Earth’s energy resources.
At a time when Black geologists were extremely underrepresented in industry roles, Dr. Gipson built a career that bridged scientific expertise with applied geology. His work contributed to improved understanding of sedimentary environments and resource development — knowledge essential for both economic geology and environmental planning.
Beyond his technical contributions, Dr. Gipson served as a role model for aspiring geologists entering an industry where representation was scarce.
Dr. Dawn Wright (1961–Present)
Mapping the Ocean Floor and Advancing Marine Geology
Dr. Dawn Wright is a marine geologist whose work has transformed how scientists understand the ocean floor — one of the least explored regions on Earth.
Her research focuses on plate tectonics, seafloor mapping, and oceanic processes, and she has played a major role in using geographic information systems (GIS) to visualize complex geological data. Dr. Wright was also the first Black woman to dive in the submersible Alvin, reaching deep-sea environments few humans have ever seen firsthand.
In addition to her scientific work, Dr. Wright is a global leader in science communication, education, and diversity advocacy — helping ensure that Earth science remains accessible, inclusive, and forward-looking.
Dr. Randolph Wilson Bromery (1926–2013)
Leadership, Geophysics, and Expanding Access to Earth Science
Dr. Randolph W. Bromery was a geophysicist, educator, and academic leader whose impact extended far beyond his research.
His scientific work focused on aeromagnetic surveys and geophysical mapping, tools that remain essential in mineral exploration and geological interpretation today. These techniques help scientists identify subsurface structures — critical for understanding mineral deposits, tectonics, and Earth’s crust.
Dr. Bromery also played a transformative role in higher education, serving in leadership positions that expanded access to science education for underrepresented students. He believed that Earth science should not be an exclusive field — but one open to all who were curious about the planet.
