Trilobites are a fossil group of extinct marine arachnomorph anthropods that existed, and thrived, for about 300 million years in the oceans. They suffered a decline in the Devonian era but it wasn't until the mass extinction that took place during the Permian era, (the biggest extinction in history) about 240 million years ago, that these unique creatures died out. There are over 20,000 scientifically recognized Trilobite species, and they are considered to be one of the most successful early species to exist.
From the amount of detail uncovered in the exoskeleton, to the delicately carved out upper-cephalon (head) portion; it is clear that this exoskeleton is in impressive shape, and exceptionally painstaking work has been put in to reveal this small creature with such respect. The segments are very well-defined, and the angle in which this specimen has been preserved offers a fantastic view of the individual segments. This Trilobite Fossil would be a fantastic center piece to any collection, and it is sure to inspire both awe and envy alike!
Trilobites have intrigued humanity for centuries, being worn as amulets by the Pahvant Ute people and incorporated into ornamentation before they were even identified fully as a species. The Pahvant Ute called them “Timpe-Konitza-Pachuee,” which is translated to, "little water bug living in a house of stone."
They were misidentified for a brief time, being considered a flat species of preserved fish in the 1600's.
