Soapstone is a talc-schist, a type of metamorphic rock that is largely composed of talc is rich in magnesium. Because of the high talc content, soapstone is relatively soft making it ideal for carving. The name "Soapstone" comes from the soapy feel of the stone once carved, polished, and waxed.

This calming Soapstone Hippo carving is from a batch mined out of the Kisii District in Western Kenya, the inhabitants of Kisii are known as the Abagusii tribe. A number of the Abagusii people have developed a skill in selecting raw stones with naturally distinct White and Rose tones. It is 12" long and would sit beautifully on a mantle, on a bookshelf, or on a desk in your office!

The carvings that are created using Soapstone are full of meaning and imagery, this piece is carved into a Hippo which signifies growth and potential. The Hippo is also thought to help in embracing our own magnitude, and help see our intrinsic, dynamic qualities.
