Blue Agate Specimen

Agates are one of the most varied minerals in the world. They are found in almost any color and a most often characterized by a semi translucent and banded appearance. Agates are great for polishing, in jewelry, and in hardstone carvings. Agates are technically a variety of chalcedony, making them part of the Quartz family of crystals. They are often formed in igneous formations, gas pockets trapped after volcanic activity, growing layer after layer inwards. The same process can occur less often in sedimentary rocks.
Agates, due to their banding and layered process of formation are thought to take you through the layers of yourself and helping you to learn more about who you are. It is thought to be grounding and stabilizing, ideal for emotional, physical, and mental balance. Agates are used as a study aid, as it is believed to help with concentration.
Agate actually got his name by a Greek philosopher between the 4th and 3rd era BCA after the Achetes River in Sicily, where such stones were often found. Agate is extremely hard to date because it tends to form on pre-existing rocks, but the host rock has been dated as far back as the Archean Eon.
