Agate is a cryptocrystalline variety of silica, made up of mostly chalcedony. It has a very fine grain, and often has a banded appearance. It was named by a Greek philosopher, who discovered it in what is now Sicily.
These tumbled Agates are from Brazil, and have been through a dye process to give them the black color you see. This process is permanent, however they may lose their color if left in water or in a high sunlight environment, so they are not recommended for fish tanks or outdoor displays. These pieces have been washed, but occasionally some dye transfer may occur.
Dyed Agate is very popular with kids, as it is appealing to the eye. It also makes great accents for wedding tables, as the color can highlight existing décor. Crafters and Wire Wrappers also tend to enjoy working with these stones.
Agates are thought to be grounding, stabilizing stones that are ideal for emotional, physical and mental balance. They are thought to improve concentration, acceptance of self, and letting go of internalized anger. Agates take you through the layers of yourself, and help you to learn more about who you are, letting go of blockages, and discovering what paths you should be exploring.
