Gem quality Olivine is Peridot, a type of silicate, and is one of only a handful of gems that occur in only one color. It sits at 6.5 - 7 on the Mohs Scale. It has a very high melting pont, making it one of the first minerals to harden in magma, therefore useful in making furnace or kiln linings. It is easily weathered, and not commonly abundant in sand. Large crystals are rare to find on Earth, and arrive on the planet via asteroid.
