Agate is a cryptocrystalline variety of silica, made up of mostly chalcedony. It has a very fine grain, and often has a banded appearance. It was named by a Greek philosopher, who discovered it in what is now Sicily. 

Since antiquity the Quartz family of crystals has been used for jewelry because of how durable it is, in fact its name is derived from the German word "Quarz" which traces its roots back to the Slavic word for hard.
